Many researchers found reading skill is appropriately promoted in primary learners. Since reading
is the basic element and tool for learning, reading comprehension skill is crucial for life-long learning.
Teaching strategy, therefore, has played an important role in English reading comprehension ability. This
research explored the concepts of significant learning approach and deep learning approach, integrated the
main principles drawn from the approaches, then teaching steps were created to teach reading
comprehension. The subjects of this study were the fifth graders of Chulalongkorn University
Demonstration Elementary School in academic year 2011. The developed six steps of English reading
comprehension teaching integrating significant and deep learning approaches included (1) Engaging the
students (2) Learning new vocabulary (3) Reading aloud (4) Completing reading exercises and feedback
(5) Activating vocabulary and (6) Individual reading and assessment. These steps of English reading
comprehension teaching aimed to significantly promote 4 levels of English reading comprehension ability
consisting of literal level, interpretative level, apply level and evaluation level. The findings of the present
study have implications for learners and teachers, and both the steps of teaching and the content in the
reading passage was created “significant learning” for learners.
