De nition of AKI
AKI is identi ed by a rise in creatinine and a
decrease in glomerular ltration rate (GFR) and/
or a decrease in urine output. Criteria and staging
of AKI are de ned by two systems: Risk, Injury,
Failure; Loss, End-Stage Renal Disease (RIFLE),developed by the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative group
(adqi.org); and the AKI Network (AKIN; akinet.org)
classification.7 Table 1 shows the criteria for both systems
