Disease-free leaf and root samples of four mangrove plants Avicennia officinalis L., Kandelia
candel (L.) Druce, Excoecaria agallocha L., Rhizophora mucronata Lam., which are medicinally
important, were collected in sterile plastic bags from Chorao, Goa, India. The leaf samples were washed
in running tap water and immediately processed. About one gram of fresh leaf material was cut into
smaller pieces and immersed in 20 ml of 20 % methanol. The leaf sample was left in methanol for 18 h
and the extract was filtered and stored for assays. The root samples were washed in seawater to remove
mud particles and then lyophilized for 12 h. The lyophilized samples were powdered, and one gram of
powdered sample was taken, mixed with 20 ml of 20% methanol and incubated in shaking water bath
for 24 h at 35 ºC. The mixture was centrifuged at maximum rpm and the supernatant was collected and
stored.
