Participants
The participants were 18 2-year-old children (M = 29.8 months; 7 girls) and 40 adults. All children
were monolingual English speakers and recruited from local day-care centers and preschools. Children
at this point in development were chosen based on research demonstrating that children begin to
develop a shape bias at around 24 months of age (e.g., Gershkoff-Stowe & Smith, 2004; Landau
et al., 1988). Adult participants were undergraduate students recruited from the department’s subject
pool. Adult participants received course credit for their participation
