Lukas put down the note then softly cried as he pet _____’s hair. He sighed then got up and pulled out a letter he wrote one week prior, but never mailed it. He scribbled something on it then put it in an envelope along with _____’s note to him. Lukas sighed again then walked to his brother Emil’s house. Lukas knocked on the door 3 times and Emil immediately answered.
“Haven’t heard from you in a week. I was worried.”
“I’m sorry to have worried you, lillbror.” Emil sighed at being called, “little brother”, but let Lukas into his house anyways, Lukas immediately embraced Emil in a tight hug. Emil was extremely confused, but he hugged back anyways. “I care about you, Little brother. You know that, right?”
“All too well. What is this about?” Lukas didn’t respond. Instead, he released Emil and handed him the envelope.
“Don’t open this for at least 30 minutes.”
“Why?”
“You’ll find out.”
“Um, okay..?”
“Goodbye, Little brother.” Lukas said then hugged Emil one more time then walked back to his house.
“What the hell..?” Emil immediately said then opened up the envelope. “I don’t see you for a week then suddenly you come over and act all weird. Well, weird for you. I wanna know what’s in this envelope now ‘cause I wanna know what’s up with you.” He mumbled. When he opened the envelope and read the letter, he trembled in shock and disbelief. The letter said,
“Dear Emil,
I wanted you to be the first to know about this because you are my little brother and I care about you the most.
Recently I have been feeling as though I have lived long enough and serve no purpose anymore. I decided to finally resolve this by taking my own life.
Do not blame yourself. It’s no one’s fault. This had nothing to do with anyone but me. Just know that I always cared about you no matter what.
I know that this is going to hurt you, and I’m sorry.
Sincerely,
Your big brother, Lukas Bondevik.”
And then at the bottom of the letter, there was something that was obviously quickly scribbled. It read,
“Emil. I wrote this letter a week ago, and decided to wait a little while, but still wanted to go through with it.
Yesterday, I met and fell in love with a girl; her name was _____. It sounds crazy that I fell in love before knowing her for even a day, but I really did love her. I thought she would be the one to make me want to live, and she was, until I found her dead on my couch this morning. She overdosed last night. She was more than depressed and wanted to die even more than I did. When I found her, my heart broke so much, that I really can’t live anymore.
I have placed her letter to me inside the envelope as well because if there’s one thing left of me, there should be one thing left of her too.
I’m just glad I got to see you one more time before dying.
Goodbye.”
Emil started to cry. He put the letter back in the envelope then put the envelope in his back pocket and ran after Lukas, not even bothering to lock the door.
“Lukas!! Lukas!!” he called out as he sprinted towards Lukas’ house. He finally caught up to Lukas just as Lukas walked up the concrete stairs in front of his house. “Lukas!” Emil called out. Lukas didn’t respond. “Big brother!” Emil yelled. Just before Lukas opened the door, he turned around and looked at Emil. “Big brother, please don’t do this!” Emil pleaded as he ran up to Lukas as he started to open the door, but was still looking at Emil, who was crying.
“Thank you, little brother.” Lukas said then went inside his house. Emil attempted to stop him, but failed. Just before Lukas completely closed the door, he told Emil, “Please leave. I don’t want you to witness this.” And then he closed the door then locked and chained it.
“Big brother!! Stop!! Please!! Big brother!!” Emil screamed as he banged on Lukas’ door. He tried breaking it down, but it didn’t work. “Big brother!! You still have a purpose!!” He kept on pleading, but he got no response. He put his ear against the door and kept banging on it. What was going on inside the house at the time was that Lukas was getting out some matches and the gun he kept in his kitchen drawer. He went over to the couch where _____’s lifeless body was still laying, and then set the bottom corner of the couch on fire. As it slowly started to spread, Lukas climbed onto the couch behind _____, put one arm under her and the gun up to his head. He felt like he should whisper something like, “I hope we’ll see each other soon”, but he had no idea how to say it or really what to say period. He closed his eyes, cried then fired the gun. His arm fell on top of _____’s body and their corpses looked like they died cuddling. Emil heard the gunshot, cried more then ran over to the window to see fire starting to quickly consume the couch that the bodies of his brother and the girl Lukas loved were lying on. Emil cried more as the fire started to consume most of the room and burned the bodies. “NOO!!!!” he screamed and balled his eyes out. Knowing that he couldn’t do anything more, Emil trudged over to the concrete steps, fell down, scraped himself, curled up into a ball at the base of the steps and continuously cried as the fire started consuming the house. He was in a safe enough place to not get hurt by the fire, although he almost wished he wasn't.
As the fire department arrived and rushed to put the fire out, the fire people saw Emil at the base of the steps, sobbing uncontrollably. Fearing that he would get hurt, one of them tried to convince Emil to get away from the house, but Emil refused. The fire person noticed that Emil was hurt, so he picked Emil up and carried him to the ambulance where he sat Emil on the back of the bus so that the paramedics could help him.
“Kid, do you know what happened?” one of the police officers asked the sobbing boy. Emil didn’t respond; he just handed the officer the envelope. The officer took the letters out and read them. He looked up at Emil and said, “I’m so sorry, kid… err, Emil, I assume?” Emil nodded. “I know it’s hard, Emil. I’ve seen this too many times. We’ll help you through this. Here’s my card. Feel free to contact me at any time.” And the officer handed Emil his business card. Emil took it, sobbed more and under his breath he said, “Big brother.”
