Extra free baggage allowance
In some circumstance, some passengers are offered extra free baggage allowances. This is mostly due to their loyalty to the airlines. The passenger's loyalty standing is indicate by their status within the airline's FFP membership. For example, Star Alliances Gold members (Figure 6.31a):oneworld Alliances (Figure 6.31b) Emerald Status member: and SkyTeam Alliances passengers with Elite statud are entitled to extra baggage allowance as follows:

* All classes-Extra 20 kg in addition to their free allowances

Another example is Bangkok Airway's Premier member who are entitled to an extra 20 kg of baggage.
Overweight baggage
Most airlines also impose weight limitations for check-in baggage. Passengers are subjected to excess baggage charges when their is over the free allowance limit. The calculation of excess baggege charges may vary. Some airline charge a flat rate for excess baggage check-in while other airlines charge excess baggage by calculating the percentage of the full-fare ticket price for a specific routing. If the baggage exceeds the maximum weight allowed, the agent gives the passenger the choice of removing items between bags,or paying for the extra weight. Occasionally, however,a big may have exceeded the allocated weight by so much that it may be dangerous to the baggage handlers,in which case the padsenger is required to remove items. Once such issues are handled, the agent tags the bag and sends it down the conveyor belt to the main baggage sorting system.
According to IATA's safety requirements, passengers are required to ensure that their baggage weighs no more than a maximum of 32 kg (70 lbs) due to safety considerations. Any baggage as cargo.
Pooling of baggage
When two or more passengers travel, they often request to combine their baggage allowances to avoid excess baggage charges. This known as pooling of baggage. Most airlines will allow passengers to combine their baggage allowances if they meet the following criteria:
• Passeners must know each other
• They must be traveling on the same destination.
• They check-in at the same check-in counter simultaneously
If the passengers do not fulfill the criteria, they will be considered as individual passengers who may only utilize the individual baggage allowances.
