Using asampleof6818individualsin83publicschooldistrictsinIceland,thisstudyexploredthe
influenceofthreecommunitycharacteristics:Residentialmobility,proportionofsingle-parentfamilies,
and povertyonadolescentdailysmoking.BuildingonColeman’ssocialcapitaltheory,wealso
examinedthemediatingandmoderatingroleofseveralmeasuresofsocialcapital.Bothself-reported
and officialdatawereusedtomeasurekeyvariables.Themainfindingsareconsistentwiththeoretical
predictionsshowingthatsocialcapitalpartlymediatestheassociationbetweencommunitycharacter-
istics andadolescentdailysmokingbothonthecommunityandindividuallevels.Likewise,thefindings
show thattheassociationbetweenindividuallevelpovertyandadolescentdailysmokingvariesacross
levelsofneighborhoodsocialcapital.
