The goal of treatment is the restoration and maintenance of the barrier function of the skin. Good control can be achieved; however, it requires meticulous and consistent home care. Present therapy is aimed at reducing epidermal proliferation and decreasing inflammation. Topical corticosteroids produce rapid resolution of mild to moderate plaques. High-potency topical glucocorticosteroids applied ideally twice (but at least once) per day produce maximum benefit in 2 to 3 weeks. Current research suggests that combination therapy of a potent steroid combined with a vitamin D analogue (either as a single product or applied separately) may be the most effective topical treatment for lesions on the skin. 6 Intertriginous psoriasis, however, should be treated with low-potency steroids.
