Though run-down and bumpy, Myanmar's trains offer a much different experience than its buses. The train between Yangon and Mandalay meanders within feet of small villages and passes countless golden pagodas and temples on its way north. And though the carriages lack air conditioning, the wide-open windows provide breezes and views of the countryside. Also, at each stop, the train is boarded by vendors selling everything from snacks to drinks to trinkets, perfect for a simple mid-route meal.
