When cooling temperatures signal the coming of fall weather, the land snail prepares to hibernate.
It searches for a nice winter resting place under fallen leaves, or it may burrow under the surface of the soil.
Here it sends out a cement-like substance hat closes the shell openings.
This protects it from the cold.
This is not the only way the snail does its own "air condiioning."
In summer the snail seals itself from the heat.
It buurows itself into the soil in order to keep cool.
