The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD or Doctorate) is the highest degree offered by the University of Melbourne. This challenging and dynamic degree involves a sustained piece of independent research and writing examining a specific problem, issue or topic. Upon completion, you’ll have made a significant and original contribution to an existing area of knowledge in your field.
Your thesis must be sponsored and approved by a tutor prior to enrolment. You also need to have attained a minimum grade in an Honours year or Masters degree to be accepted.
As of 2015, the Melbourne School of Government will only be accepting applications for Graduate Research study to commence in Semester 1. No midyear intake will be offered. Students are also required to commence the degree by the first week of Semester 1. Students who cannot meet this timeline will need to submit an application for entry in Semester 1, 2016.
