Five distinct categories emerged. The first, Knew HIV status/Believed or confirmed HIV negative, included respondents who knew their HIV status without specifying whether they were HIV positive or negative (e.g., ‘We both know our HIV status and wanted the pleasure.’), believed their partner was HIV negative (e.g., ‘He told me he was HIV- and I believed him.’), and had recently been confirmed HIV negative (e.g., ‘he showed me his papers for HIV testing-he got tested every 3 months’).
