Group Presentation Reflection
For the persuasive speech assignment I worked with a group of four other people. As soon as we received the assignment we met every day after class. First we discussed what the topic of our speech would be and settled on lowering the drinking age. There was much deliberation among members so we weighed the pros and cons of all ideas proposed. While there was initially some disagreement our discussions were civil. Another group member came up with the topic of lowering the drinking age and I was immediately in favor. I convinced the rest of the group by showing them that there is a lot of information about it online and highlighting that it was relevant to our lives because of our ages.
After we decided on a topic we chose the format of persuasive speech and divided up the work. We had three main points, an introduction and a close. Two people split the longer point and one person did both the introduction and the close because they were shorter. Since I am an extravert I was very talkative at meetings and immediately volunteered to speak about one of the main points. After we had all written or parts we met again to practice and work on transitions.
Speaking up often and directing the meeting was one of my strengths. Correspondingly, one of my weaknesses the fact that sometimes I have trouble listening to other peoples ideas. Fortunately, another member of the group was as outspoken as I so we worked together to remind each other when to hold back. The only difficulty my group has was that some people had not finished their parts in time for one of our meetings. However, rather than gripe about it the members that had finished helped the ones who had so we could move forward with practicing our presentation. Overall, the group collaborated effectively with little conflict.
