If funds are not available for artificial pruning and natural pruning must be relied upon in a forestation project there will be little clear wood produced unless very long rotations can be sustained. Most trees will ultimately shed the lower branches in closed plantation formation so that clearwood will ultimately be produced. However,it may be necessary to grow these trees for 100 years or more to obtain sufficient clear wood to be able to saw clear boards from them.Few commercial operations can afford to wait this long if the produntion of clearwood is one of the objectives.
