Red Square dominates the center of Moscow as much as it did Soviet-era politics, which began in 1917 under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. The Lenin Mausoleum in Red Square that displays Lenin’s body is a tribute to his role in the revolution that resulted in the creation of the Soviet Union. Across the square, the brightly colored domes and spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral stand in juxtaposition to the Soviet-era architecture of Lenin's tomb.
