The IEEE 802.3az standard deals with the mainstream “BASE-T” interfaces (i.e. 10BASE-T; 100BASE-TX; 1000BASE-T; and 10GBASE-T) that operate over twisted pair wiring [12]. These interface types comprise the vast majority of Ethernet deployments, especially at the edge of networks where the opportunities for energy savings are maximal. The standard also covers Backplane Ethernet interfaces used in blade servers (as well as within proprietary systems) because the amount of change required for those interfaces was considered minor.
