Step1 : Set the Stage
• Ask students to name places they like to go when they eat out.
• Talk about the math skills that can help people figure out what a meal will cost: estimating, rounding up, and rounding down.
• Read aloud the real-life scenario above.
Step 2: Overview
• Hand out copies of page 6.
• Review estimating and rounding up. Explain that when we estimate prices, we round up the price to the next higher dollar if the cents are 50¢ or greater. For example: $1.75 is almost $2.00; $4.80, $3.89 is almost $4.00.
•Have students round up for these amounts: $2.65, $4.80, $1.95.
