CONCLUSION
The results of this study showed that vegetables and fruits produced and consumed within the Maiduguri
metropolis posed a great bacteriological risk to consumers which causes public health problems, due to
presence of pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria like Salmonella species, S. aureus, B. cereus,
Pseudomonas species, E. coli and Klebsiella species, in the fruits and vegetables, despite the samples did not
shown any visible signs of spoilage. This further highlights the need to safeguard the health of the final
consumers by proper washing and disinfection of these products which are consumed in their raw forms.
