To ensure that tourists had an immediate view of the landscape, only
participants who were outdoors near the beach, bar, or swimming pool
areas overlooking the shoreline were recruited. Interviews were conducted
on different parts of the shoreline to account for variety in recreation
patterns, gender, as well as inclusion of tourists from the
various hotels. Most interviewees were uncomfortable with recording
so shorthand entries were done. The duration of the interviews ranged
from 15–30 minutes; all were conducted on sunny days and pseudonyms
were used. With the exception of three individuals, participants
were very receptive to the interview process and more than willing to
share information, perhaps owing to their perceived sense of leisure
timelessness. The interviews were semi-structured to allow participants
adequate flexibility in sharing their experiences and opinions of the
landscape. The interview questions followed the classification devised
by Patton (1990) which suggests incorporation of questions onexperience/behavior, opinion/value feelings, knowledge, sensory
experience and lastly, demographic/background.
