1. Barazuto Archipelago, Mozambique
Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” these five islands are swathes of empty sand beaches; package tourism and large-scale resorts haven’t made it to Bazaruto. Traditional sailing dhows still ply the waters, but travelers will likely be arriving to this destination off the eastern coast of Africa via a seaplane trip over the untouched coral reefs that now only continue to flourish thanks to official conservation and recognition.
