(Kitco News) - U.S. gold futures were choppy in the aftermath of a “deliberately opaque” Federal Open Market Committee statement Wednesday, said analysts.
Although traders and analysts were looking for some direction from policymakers, they didn’t hear anything to signal that the Fed is ready to start tapering its quantitative easing program. However, traders continue to expect this scenario as economic data has been improving.
“The end result of this is…there were not a lot of conclusions to draw,” said Bill O’Neill, one of the principals with LOGIC Advisors. “We’re in the (same position) as we were before the meeting.
“I think they were deliberately opaque on indicating whether or not (they would taper),” O’Neill later added.
On balance, markets appear to be collectively still looking for some type of tapering announcement in September, said Frank Lesh, broker and analyst with FuturePath Trading.
On the one hand, he explained, the Federal Reserve seemingly maintained a neutral stance by saying policymakers could increase or decrease the amount of monetary accommodation depending upon the data. But on the other hand, the recent trend has been improving data that seemingly would make reduced bond buying the more likely scenario, he continued.
In fact, he and other analysts blamed stronger data earlier in the day for weakness in gold heading into the FOMC statement.
Yet, gold held up since the Fed also left some uncertainty.
“It probably stopped some of the tapering fears traders had going into it when they saw the strong ADP jobs data and the stronger-than-expected gross-domestic-product number,” said Phil Flynn, senior market strategist with Price Futures Group. “Gold traders got nervous (ahead of time). I think they’re still nervous, but they’re a little less nervous.”
Gold tends to fall when the market worries the Fed might cut back on the bond-purchasing program meant to push down long-term yields, known as quantitative easing. Conversely, the metal tends to rise when traders think QE will continue.
Both forces seemed to be at play Wednesday. December gold settled the Comex pit session, which ended half an hour ahead of the FOMC statement, with a decline of $11.80. The metal trimmed that loss shortly after the statement came out, but soon turned south again, with the December contract hitting a $1,305.30 low that was its weakest level since July 22. And then the contract snapped right back, recovering the day’s losses.
As of 3:38 p.m. EDT, gold for December delivery was nearly flat for the day, down 60 cents to $1,324.20 an ounce. September silver was up 14 cents to $19.82, compared to a pit settlement of $19.628.
Economists are describing the statement after a two-day FOMC meeting as not much different from the one in June, although officials might have slightly downgraded their assessment of the economy, saying it has been expanding at a “modest” pace so far this year rather than the term “moderate” used in June. Policymakers also expressed concern about the low rate of inflation and acknowledged rising mortgage rates.
Otherwise, they offered no fresh hints on when they might taper quantitative easing, saying they stand ready to act either way as appropriate but adding that a “highly accommodative stance of monetary policy will remain appropriate for a considerable time” even after bond purchases end and the economic recovery strengthens.
“I don’t think anybody heard what they wanted,” said Lesh. “They wanted something more definitive.”
Ralph Preston, principal with Heritage West Financial, commented that the market is right back to focusing on each piece of U.S. economic data. “The Fed is probably the same way, looking at how strong is the data,” he said.
The $1,300 area is important technical support for gold and should that fail, the market may test the $1,285 area, Preston added.
Going into this week’s FOMC meeting, economists did not expect the Fed to announce tapering just yet. However, many were looking for some type of announcement at the policymakers’ next meeting in September. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke previously has suggested the Fed could start scaling back its bond purchases this year, assuming the economy keeps improving; however, he has also gone to lengths to emphasize that policy will remain accommodative and tapering is not the same as tightening.
The euro was up to $1.3298 compared to $1.3288 two minutes ahead of the Fed communiqué. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 2.593% from 2.66% just ahead of time.
“There was nothing in that statement that was not supportive for gold,” Flynn said. “The gold market is feeling a little bit better after the statement. But it still has to consider the fact that the economic data was good. Even though the Fed isn’t tapering today, if the economic data continues to come in like it did today…more than likely they will be tapering in September or later on.”
Observers blamed the gold weakness ahead of the FOMC statement largely on improved U.S. data released this morning.
Second-quarter gross domestic product grew by an annual rate of 1.7%, topping forecasts for 1% to 1.1%, although this was somewhat offset by a downward revision in first-quarter growth to 1.1% from 1.8% due to changes in how the government measures the economy. A report compiled by Automatic Data Processing showed that private-sector employers added 200,000 jobs in July, when expectations had been for 175,000 to 185,000. Also, the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index rose to 52.3 in July from 51.6 in June, when expectations had been for a reading of 54.0.
“I think it (the decline in gold) was the data and specifically the employment data,” Lesh said. “The Fed has told us over and over and over again that they are focusing on that employment data. If we continue to see the employment data improve, I can’t see any way they wouldn’t begin their tapering.”
Added Preston: “The GDP data did put some pressure on gold. But it’s funny that we’re getting excited over 1.7% growth when several years ago we had 3% growth.”
The Fed focus on data means the market will be zeroing in heavily on the July jobs report due out Friday, analysts said. Additionally, FOMC members will get to see the August figures before they meet again in September.
