Administrators of large, national
databases should make collection of this information
a top priority. This study demonstrates a high
rate of macrosomia in a large, managed-care
cohort, and excessive birth weight was strongly
associated with numerous adverse maternal birth
outcomes. Since this cohort has a low rate of low
birth weight (5.7%) compared to the U.S. population,
it may be more prudent to focus future
research efforts on modifiable risk factors for
excessive birth weight in these women.
