Hepatic steatosis (or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) and
chronic low-grade inflammation are 2 conditions that are associated
with obesity and the metabolic syndrome (3,20). Green
tea consumption has been shown to be inversely correlated with
liver damage (a consequence of progressive hepatic steatosis) and
with markers of inflammation in humans (21,22). In high-fat–
fed C57BL/6J and leptin-deficient ob/ob obese mice, green tea
treatment reduced liver lipids and markers of liver damage
(10,23).
