We suggest the term momentary medication-taking
behavior (mMTB) be defined as a subcategory
of medication-taking behavior. This term is inspired
by the principle of ecological momentary assessment,
which uses repeated collection of realtime
data on subjects’ behavior and experience in
their natural environments.66 We suggest the term
momentary adherence (mA) be defined as both a
subcategory of adherence and a subcategory of
momentary medication-taking behavior. Momentary
behavior describes instantaneous behavior, rather
than behavior summarized over long intervals of time.
Monthly, weekly, or even daily intervals of assessment
could be broken down into assessment of much
smaller intervals around a single expected or actual
dose of medication. mA is event-based. An event
could be a behavior of taking, adjusting, or not taking
a dose of medication.
