This is a complex undertaking with a range of variables in play – including cultivation techniques, algal species selection and market conditions. The project has successfully installed two sunlight-dependent algae growth technologies in Portugal – both using photosynthesis – and therefore suited to Portugal’s sunny climate. A third technique involves growing the algae in the dark – using steel fermentation vessels – and CPI has made significant progress in bringing these vessels to a point where they can be shipped to Portugal for side-by-side scientific comparison with the two other technologies.
