Although there have been people mining salt and living in the Hallstatt area since 5,000 BC, the village didn’t really start gaining power until between 800-400 BC (The Hallstatt Era) when they started exporting their. This museum, founded in 2002, covers the entire 7,000 year period but mainly focuses on the Hallstatt Era. The Museum has been completely restored and refurbished recently with very modern facilities for visitors. The newly contemporary museum provides wonderful insight into the unique history of Hallstatt and the surrounding area.
