Group work in a university setting is done within the context of three
learning modalities – face-to-face, online, and blended. “Face-to-face” refers to
the traditional, in-person learning modality. “Online” refers to the use of
communications technologies that allow for remote learning and can be delivered
asynchronously (not occurring in the same time), synchronously (occurring in the
same time), or some combination of both. “Blended learning,” a newly labeled
learning modality, has seen significant growth in interest since participants at the
2005 Sloan-C Workshop adopted this definition:
