In comparison, an advantage in weight at
weaning in the present study was found to be a much
more important determinant of pig weight at 10 weeks of
age. Our analysis showed that a 1 kg advantage in weaning
weight resulted in a 1.8 to 2.3 kg weight advantage at 10
weeks of age. The benefit from a weaning weight advantage was found to be greatest for the earlier weaned pigs.
Therefore, our results are in line with previous results from
our group where increases of 1.3 to 1.7 kg in pig weight at
four weeks postweaning were found in response to a 1 kg
weaning weight advantage (Lawloretal.,2002, 2003b).
