Hardly anything can be found in the novels so far; Kagami is good at keeping us hanging and wanting more, isn’t he. The inventory of obscure hints to date is: the universally admitted fact that Ferid is graceful and refined; that he wanted to be a painter; that his swordplay style is that of royalty (to quote the novel: “It was a style that Crowley had never seen before. The movements were extremely refined. Like some sort of ceremonial fencing taught to royalty.”); there is also that off-hand remark in volume 1 when Ferid said to Crowley “let’s say that I’m the third son myself as well”.
So, if you want my guess with an injection of wild theories on the side, I think Ferid was a prince of some sort, but not the Crown one; like Crowley, he wasn’t next in the line to succeed his father, so he had to try and find something else where he could apply himself. On top of that, he is very smart, clearly a genius, so he may have had an issue with his much dumber older brother(s) succeeding their father on the stupid basis of them being a couple of years older and subsequentially wrecking the country with their stupidity. That might have had a rather common extra twist of him being the son of a concubine instead of a proper wife, and all that entails. He might have wanted to become a painter but couldn’t because that profession was considered to be lowly for a prince. Oh and, unlike in Crowley’s life who only knew love for comrades and family-like affection for his squire and the boy he saved, it is implied that in Ferid’s life there may have been a romantic love (though it’s unclear whether he loved someone or was loved by someone).
