An Analysis of Pedagogical Concepts
in the Elementary
Solo Repertoire Compositions of Dennis Alexander
by
Alena Pagal
The purpose of this document was to determine the parameters of successful
compositions for the elementary level piano student. The educational solo piano
compositions of Dennis Alexander were examined as excellent models of highlyeffective
and pedagogically sound writing. The analysis includes investigation into the
metric, rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, and patterned components that are contained within
these pieces.
This document contains three chapters. Chapter one is comprised of biographical
information on Dennis Alexander, his career as a composer of educational solo piano
literature, and the significance of examining his compositions. Chapter two consists of a
comprehensive analysis of all of Dennis Alexander’s elementary compositions to date.
While the focus of this research was to examine only the solo repertoire pieces, optional
teacher duets were also considered for further insight into the intended harmonic
progressions of some of the solo pieces. Chapter three summarizes the analysis of
chapter two and offers suggestions for further study in this area.
