Gingival fibromatosis is a heterogenous group of gingival
hypertrophy which is known by other names like elephantiasis
gingivae, hereditary gingival hyperplasia, idiopathic
fibromatosis and hypertrophied gingivae. It is a rare condition
characterized by slow, progressive enlargement of the
gingivae.1
The pathogenesis of gingival hypertrophy is still obscure,
while some are iatrogenic, genetics as well as idiopathic cases
have been reported.2e4
Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (IGF) is a rare condition
that has no definite cause.5 The gingival enlargement may
occur alone or in conjunction with other abnormalities,
as part of a syndrome, most commonly in association
with hypertrichosis and epilepsy, with or without mental
retardation.
