Endoglucanase or carboxymethylcellulase e (CMCase) activity was determined by measuring spectrophotometrically the reducing sugars produced from 2% (w/v) carboxymethylcellulose, while filter- paper-hydrolysing (FPase) activity was determined by estimating the reducing sugars liberated from the filter paper (Wood and Bhat, 1988). Both reactions were carried out in 0.05 M sodium acetate buffered at pH 5 and incubated at 50 oC. The reaction time was 30 and 60 min for CMCase and FPase, respectively. One unit of CMCase or FPase activity is defined as 1 umol reducing sugar released/ml enzyme/min. Meanwhile, B-glucosidase was deter mined using the method described by Wood and Bhat (1988).
