In this definition,
accepting one’s sexual orientation and gender identity
is a core aspect of sexual health (Mustanski, Lyons, &
Garcia, 2011). LGBT youth can be challenged in this
respect as members of a minority group that experience
sexual prejudice (Herek & McLemore, 2013); the internalization
of this prejudice has been shown to have
adverse mental health consequences (Hatzenbuehler,
2009; Newcomb & Mustanski, 2010).
