In the first part of this study, chitosan, ferric sulfate, and alum were tested for coagulation of N. oleoabundans to determine the optimum conditions for removal of the algae from aqueous medium. The second part of this study presents a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of five different separation scenarios by which algae could be potentially recovered from liquid medium on an industrial scale: flocculation with (1) chitosan (2) ferric sulfate and (3) alum; (4) centrifugation; and (5) filter press separation. We examine the energy and environmental implications of these different separation methods with the aim of evaluating multiple processing routes for N. oleoabundans.
