On the Promise to Shoulder the Burden of Taxation Equally
The Assembly of Notables expressed a formal wish that the three orders
should all be subject to the same taxes. But they were not asked to
offer this opinion. The question at issue was the manner in which the Estates-General was to be convoked, not the content of the deliberations
that that Assembly might undertake. This wish has, therefore, to be set
alongside those issued by the Peers, the Parlement and the many private
associations and individuals who are all now rushing to agree that the
richest should pay as much as the poorest
