An ex am in atio n has been made of the feasibility of using electric ligftin g
in greenhouses t o supply supplem entalirradiation for plant growth, as
well as a major portion of the greenhouse heating needs.Areas of
investigation include lighting equipment and design , energy needs for
heating and lighting , plant growth requirements, and economics of
operation.Attention has been focused on greenhouse operations producing
tomatoes in the Montreal region. The findings indicate that although the
use of artificial lights in greenhouses is feasible, the total annual
costs of greenhouses producing tomatoes near Montreal are approximately
doubled.
