The level of inbreeding in a given population
is dependent on effective population size rather
than actual population size. The increase in the
level of inbreeding per generation is expected
to be 1/2Ne
. This is the increase expected per
generation if each animal produces an equal
number of offspring, and the animals in the
initial population are not related to each other.
If these assumptions are not met, the degree
of inbreeding will be higher. Based on this relationship, Gregory et al
