The inadequacies of these simple one-dimensional techniques have led investigators to use techniques such as two-dimensional immunoeletrophoresis, where it is possible to demonstrate additional changes of plasma proteins e.g. in rat given hypolipidaemic agent. When quantitive immunoelectrophoretic techniques were used to study the acute phase response to carrageenan in rat , changes for over 20 individual protein were demonstrated,in contrast to the simple observations of increased plasma alpha- and beta-globulins made with cellulose acetate electrophoretic methods
