The poor children in The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara would be perfect people for Kasser, who wrote The High Price of Materialism, to teach his beliefs to. In The Lesson Miss Moore takes her class, mainly consisted of poor kids to a toy store, which is like a museum to them. The store is like a museum because all the kids can do is look at the toys because they were valuable thing to them because the prices were so high for them. When the kids are in the toy store, they desire many objects that are too expensive for themselves to buy. During the trip Miss Moore would point out to the kids that they can’t buy these toys because of their place in society, which was in poverty. Miss Moore was teaching something on the lines of what Kasser would teach to the poor kids in The Lesson.
Kasser believes that the desire for materialism is unhealthy for humans. If Kasser saw the kids desiring the toys, he would say to them that there is no point in them wanting the toys because they would never get them. He would also say that if they keep on desire things they will never get it would be unhealthy for them. In addition, I believe Kasser would tell them to look for something that is possible for them to get a hold of that would benefit their lives healthily. I believe he would tell them to strive for love because it is something that has such greatness and achievability in their lives. Miss Moore was trying to do the same as Kasser for she was trying to point out to the kids that most things will not be attainable for them, but there are other things much more valuable and reachable in their lives like love.
