There are around 1.5 million people of Japanese origin living in Brazil-more than in any country apart
from Japan. The first people from Japan (a) decide to Brazil at the beginning of the last century looking for a better life. Most of them (b) come on coffee plantations. Some of them (c) marry Brazilians, (d) have children and settled in their new country.
During the Second World War, Brazil didn’t allow the teaching of Japanese in schools and the children of the settlers (e) speak only Portuguese. At the end of the war many more Japanese people (f) begin to stay in Brazil.
In the 1980 there were economic problems in Brazil while Japan’s economy (g) return to improve. A lot of Japanese families (h) work to Japan. Today there are around 300,000 Japanese Brazilians living in Japan.
