If exposure to safe risks such as rough-and-tumble play are beneficial for the child, Bögels and Phares (2008) hypothesise that if fathers do not encourage these interactions, the child is at risk of developing anxiety. Accumulating research in this area suggests that challenging parenting behaviour may buffer early separation, stranger, novelty and social anxiety (Bögels and Phares, 2008 and Majdandžić et al., 2014).
