Twenty-nine males and 78 females were re-interviewed in 1986-1987. The
youngest respondent was 65 in 1966. The median age for the 1966 sample was 73.8
for males and 74.7 for females; for those re-interviewed in 1974 it was 78.2 and 80.5.
In 1986, the median age was 90 for females and 91 for males. The men were more
likely than the women to have been married and the women more likely to have been
widowed at the time of the third interview in 1986-1987 (see Table 2).
The analysis using Cox Proportional Hazards Model showed 5 variables with a
statistically significant ability to assess risk of death. These were: age, male sex, poor
health, no formal participation and high formal participation. Table 3 presents the
model.
