China's export trade to the Nanhai (South Seas") was already flourishing in the Song dynasties and Yuan dynasties. Early Ming wares, including celadon, Jingdezhen white porcelain, Cizhou, qingbai, and Dehua as well as the wide range of ware produced in the newly discovered kiln in Guangxi, have been found in huge quantities over an area extending from the Philippines to East Africa. Most intriguing among their products for export was the kendi, often used for feeding babies and old people or for giving medicine, and perhaps for ritual purposes as well. Two typical kendi found in Java and Malaysia are shown below the kraak dish in fig 9.35.
