In May 2016 Myanmar President Hiten Kyaw and de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited Laos. This was seen as the new government’s genuine efforts in improving its strained relations with ASEAN members. The new democratically elected’s choice of the foreign country for its first foreign trip after coming into power has been appreciated by all the member states. Suu Kyi and the President met Laotian President and other officials to pursue deeper economic integration and stronger multilateral ties through ASEAN Economic Community which was launched by the bloc in the year 2015. Both the countries discussed for better large scale projects such as cross-border highways and rail lines on Mekong River region which includes Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, along with Myanmar and Laos. Besides, resumption of direct flights between both the countries along with other cooperative measures in the field of trade, tourism and investment were also discussed.
