Coming 2016, Bridgestone Japan has requested the shipping lines to adopt seaway bill instead of original bill of lading (OBL).
Most carriers are agreeable to this arrangement. Now, we would like to broach this idea of implementing Seaway bill to shippers.
In actual fact, since 2010, Bridgestone Singapore has started adopting seaway bill for some of our rubber shipments and has been able to achieve following benefits:-
1) Speedy cargo clearance at destination as OBL is no longer needed to cargo collection.
2) Speedy receipt of copy way bill at port of loading by shippers as there is significant reduction in waiting time compared to OBL issuance by carriers.
3) No physical printing and collection of OBL is necessary. Shipper need only present copy way bill.
4) Carriers’ scan copy of way bill to shipper and/or Bridgestone is deem suffice for cargo release at destination.
5) Sellers need only present original invoice, full set of original documents plus copy way bill for payment processing by Bridgestone Singapore.
Frankly, even with above list of advantages, we do foresee resistance from sellers.
Then again, we are betting on the chances that long term shippers; whom have direct contracts with us; may prefer to adopt this way bill to enjoy above benefits.
The main purchase contract with defined incoterms would have covered most concerns that buyer and sellers have on shipment responsibilities, cargo ownership and payment obligations.
Thus, having either OBL or way bill should be less of a concern to shippers and hopefully you would consider accepting seaway bill for Japan contract from 2016 shipments onwards.
