In Exp. 2, diets were the same as those used in Exp. 1, except that chromium oxide (Cr2O3) was included at 3 g/kg diet at the expense of corn to evaluate digestibility of dietary AA. Crossbred piglets [Duroc × Large White × Land race, 9.05 ± 1.38 (SD) kg bodyweight] were weaned at 28-day old and housed individually in metabolism cages. Given that housing pigs individually in metabolism cages is a further challenge to weanling piglets, which may increase the risk of disease post weaning, the adaption period with dietary ingredients and composition similar to that of the prestart diet may help decease the stresses associated with the environmental change. Thus, piglets were all fed the CON diet during the one-week adaption period, and then continuously fed the CON diet or alternatively fed the SF3 diet for two weeks with 7 pigs (4 female and 3 male) per diet.
