Means shall be provided to keep deck spills away from the accommodation and service areas. This may be accomplished by means of a permanent continuous coaming of a height of at least 300mm, extending from side to side. Special consideration shall be given to the arrangements associated with stern loading.
(SOLAS II-2.4.5.1.6)
Continuous coaming of suitable height shall be fitted to keep any spills on deck and away from the
accommodation and service areas. (IBC 3.7.7)
Notes: A secondary purpose of this coaming is to provide oil retention at the after end of the maindeck in the event of an oil spill, giving the crew sufficient time to deal with it and avoid oil entering the water. For gas carriers this question should be answered 'NA'.
