Conservation initiatives often seek to recoup at least some of their costs; in addition to ecotourism, there could be the sale of surplus game animals like alligators, souvenir materials or safari fees for visitors.
Perhaps the closest link between conservation and environmental protection and exploitation to fund such activities is the extractive reserve. There is also a controversial field of patent charges and royalties applied to biodiversity; commerce, developing countries, NGOs and international agencies are involved in ongoing lobbying and debate about this.
