631 - A fixed post, such as staffing a gatehouse, is costly both in terms of manpower and maintenance. If possible, permanent gatehouses should not be planned. However, there may be a need to have gatehouses at a particular site. If this is the case, the following should be taken in consideration: ? Outdoor lighting should be located on the gatehouse ? Yellow safety poles should be placed at all four corners, if positioned near a vehicle entrance/exit. These poles should be a minimum of 4 inch diameter steel that should extend 4 feet above the ground and be imbedded in concrete 4 feet below grade. ? Lane closure identifiers should be available for each lane. ? If possible, the front of the gatehouse should not be positioned directly into the sun. If so, provisions should be made to place some type of sun filter on the windows, without obstructing the view of Security personnel assigned to the gate. ? The gatehouse should be equipped with an adequate cooling/heating system. ? This system should be checked prior to each season to assure that heating and cooling equipment are functioning appropriately. ? The gatehouse should be equipped with a restroom, if possible. ? The gatehouse should be equipped with a computer, radio communications and a telephone. The number of telephones and telephone lines should be a factor of the number of security personnel who will be assigned at any one time to the gatehouse. The minimum number of telephones and telephone lines is three (3). ? Provisions should be made for CCTV camera monitoring as described in 511 above. ? Facilities personnel should be contacted and arrangements made for maintenance concerns. NOTE: This guidelines also apply to truck gates.
