While the globalization of the English language is great for American offi cials operating, or tourists traveling, abroad, it also means, because seemingly everyone else speaks English, Americans are even less inclined to learn other languages than was true in the past. It also breeds resentment throughout the world in that Americans expect everyone else to speak their language while only rarely do they learn other people's languages. Of course, the ability to use your own language while abroad while others have to struggle to keep up in their often-still-imperfect English gives you enormous advantage in any busi- ness transaction or diplomatic negotiation being carried out. Recall also that in foreign countries people are quite literally being bombarded constantly with English-language music, commercials, and political messages.
